Doctoral Researcher in the Project Style and Gender Performance in Arabic Fiction and Media
Hasnaa Essam obtained her Master Degree in Teaching Arabic as a Foreign Language from the department of Applied Linguistics at the American University in Cairo. Her MA entitled "Howwa wheyya: Performance and gendered style in the Egyptian caricature 'The Piece of Paper'" . Her bachelor's degree is in English language, literature and simultaneous translation.
Ms. Essam has an eleven-year experience in teaching Arabic as a foreign language and obtained various positions in that field including education vice manager, trainer, senior instructor and education developer. Hasnaa's research interests are in the field of sociolinguistics, discourse analysis, and gender styles. In her PhD project, Hasnaa explores the linguistic portrayal of gender and stereotypes in the context of Arabic fiction, film and TV series. Her qualitative study approaches the three genres as corpus of performed language in order to demonstrate authors’ stereotypical perceptions of gendered linguistic style. The study attempts to raise social awareness of stereotypical linguistic portrayals of gender in an attempt to reconstruct social perceptions apart from categorization.
